Sixteenth century ivory in Manikchhari

Two ivory tusks, dating back to the 16th century, have been found at the Mong Raja's residence under Manikchhari upazila in the hill district Khagrachhari.

The ivory give insights into the life styles of the Mong King and his family. Until now the tusks were under the possession of Unika Devi, daughter of the late Mong King Mong Prue Chaine, who passed away in 1991, said sources.

While asked to comment, Rajib Roy, husband of Unika Devi, told this correspondent that the tusks were the second largest found in the sub-continent. He pointed out that the largest ivory tusk belonging to Tipu Sultan measured at 18 feet.

Mentioning presidents and government high-ups who visited the Mong King's residence, Roy said that quite a few had expressed their desire to take the ivory tusks back with them. “However we put up a stiff resistance as we take pride in these ancient remains which attract many tourists,” he concluded.
